Hey there I’m Ian and I’m a Marketing Wizard here at Marketwake. Do you get curious? Oh, gee I know I sure do get really curious a lot of times. And What do you do when you get curious? You hop on Google and you search it. And so today we’re going to talk about the most searched words on Google over the last year. Let’s hop right into it.
Number one, YouTube. Over 1.2 billion people in the past six months searched the word YouTube. Number two, Facebook. Number three, WhatsApp web. Number four, Google. Wait, what? You’re already on Google, why are you searching Google? That’s just plain not smart. Rounding out the top five is the fifth most searched word, Gmail.
A few keywords we’re leaving out? Those that aren’t appropriate for work. Roughly 20% of the most searched words are porn-related.
Random Keywords
Next, we’re going to dive into a few random keywords that snuffed it away into the top 100. The 38th spot on the most searched words list was the letter G. Just the letter G. Does that count as a searched word? We’ll leave that up to you to decide. Perhaps these searches came from a few of the people who started to search for Google and realized they were already there. Other letters in the top 100? Y and F.
Most Asked Questions
Next, we’re going to dive into the most asked questions. You get curious, you ask a question. That’s how Google works! Now how many of you have asked one of these top 5 most searched questions lately?
- What to watch?
- What is my IP?
- How many ounces in a cup?
- What if?
- How to delete Instagram account?
A few puzzling questions caught my eye.
- Where am I? (Yikes. I hope the Google Maps gods helped with this one!)
- What dinosaur has 500 teeth? (Was this a trivia question on ‘Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader’ or something?)
- How are you? (I’m fine, how are you?)
Weird Ones
Now we’re going to dive into some weird ones that I found. How old am I? If you don’t know what age you are, then maybe you need to go see a doctor.
How do you spell? If you don’t know how to spell, maybe you should go back to grammar school.
How to make slime? I don’t know why that made it, but it did. And then a few other ones that caught my attention: What is this song? Who sings this song? So you can kind of see the Google home/Alexa searches being thrown in there.
Global Trends
Some interesting global search trends emerged this year and caught our eye. These words and phrases were searched more this year than ever before.
- Love you in sign language
- What is retrograde
- Y2K
- Sea shanties
- Soulmate
Global Movements
One thing about the modern era of changemakers? We’re on the move to improve the lives of future generations and those around us. Change begins with awareness and education, and these most searched words give us hope for the future.
Around the world, the most Googled words about environmental causes were how to conserve, impact of climate, and sustainability.
Other most searched words globally related to social causes were ‘missing indigenous women’ and ‘what is a hate crime’.
TikTok Slang
TikTok is the real MVP of the last couple years. It’s no surprise that many of the most searched words revolve around TikTok: TikTok recipes, TikTok trends, TikTok slang.
How many searchers were trying to improve their TikTok reputation? ‘How to be a baddie’ was the 4th most searched ‘how to be’ phrase. If you find out… let us know…
According to TikTok trendsetters, skinny jeans were totally cheugy. Which is probably how ‘how to style straight leg jeans’ showed up as the top most searched phrase in the ‘how to style’ category.
Memes
Memes. What would the internet be without them? The most googled words in the meme category: Bernie Sanders’ mittens, hamster, twisted tea, Squid Game, sheesh.
Food
Food. These are the top searched recipes of 2021: TikTok pasta, bacon jam, birria tacos, crockpot chicken, and hamantaschen. And that finds us searching again for hamantaschen…
Musicians
Musicians. Top five musicians trends searched in the last year: Travis Scott, Morgan Wallen, Adele, The Weeknd, and Dr. Dre. And that is the conclusion to my list.
